“The Heart of Miami“
Kendall is a large suburban area located roughly west of South Dixie Highway from SW 88th Street (Kendall Drive) south to about SW 152nd Street, all the way to the Everglades. It’s about an hour drive from downtown Miami and is a popular location for many families to live and commute to the city as needed. It’s home to one of the largest shopping centers, Dadeland Mall and also to the Falls, an outdoor shopping mall. Other notable sites include the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport, one of the Miami metro area’s general aviation airports and the Miami-Metro Zoo.
Being that it is much farther west, this area was settled later than the eastern areas of Miami. The area is named after Major John Broughton Kendall, a surveyor who mapped many areas of Florida. The land was purchased from the State of Florida in 1883 by the Florida Land and Mortgage Company. Through the early 1900s the town slowly started to grow. Now it’s a busy area with many newer residential developments, condos, and even larger of land farther west.
