There’s a huge misconception that Miami-Dade County is one giant playground for the rich. In reality, multiple neighborhoods in Miami are highly affordable and highly welcoming to first-home homebuyers from all sorts of economic backgrounds.
Some of these up-and-coming neighborhoods carry the same advantages as their more expensive counterparts, offering a similar quality of life for a significantly lower price tag. The only difference is most people haven’t heard of them, which is bound to happen in such a big County with so many cities, villages, and neighborhoods.
Here are four widely overlooked but highly affordable neighborhoods in Miami:
Redland
Named for the red clay that dominates its geological landscape, Redland (a.k.a. “the Redlands”) is a beautiful community about 20 miles from Downtown Miami. With its farms, historic buildings and vast swaths of open land, Redland is a physically large area that maintains a “small town” vibe, and its rich agricultural history is very much alive.
One reason Redland had stayed under the radar is its strict requirements for new construction. This has managed to not only keep development at a reasonable pace, while leaving plenty of room for peacocks and other wildlife that walk freely in Redland’s many groves. Redland is also conveniently located very close to Florida Turnpike and US-1, making it an ideal choice for commuters.
Kendall
The affordability of Kendall, is frankly mind-boggling because it’s an area that’s home to a massive range of shopping centers, restaurants, parks, and recreational facilities. Given its proximity to numerous major highways such as the Florida Turnpike and the Palmetto Expressway, Kendall is particularly popular with commuters who work in Downtown Miami or other neighboring cities.
Kendall also boasts an array of highly reputable public and private schools as well as a diverse population from all over the world. This makes Kendall a notably vibrant and inclusive community, with plenty of cultural events and celebrations all throughout the year.
Tamiami
The neighborhood of Tamiami is named after its famous roadway – Tamiami Trail – which connects Tampa to Miami. While other subsets of Miami are known for tourists, traffic, and crowded beaches, Tamiami is a quiet town with a more peaceful lifestyle. This has made Tamiami very desirable for retirees, college students, new families, or anyone who prefers green spaces over busy streets filled with touristy shops and restaurants. On that note, Tamiami is also surrounded by a host of lakes and parks such as North Trail Park, International Gardens Park, Tamiami Lakes Park, and, oh yeah: Everglades National Park!
Country Walk
If family-friendly is what you’re looking for, Country Walk is as pure and innocent as it gets. With its tree-lined streets, white picket fences, and tranquil atmosphere, Country Walk epitomizes the quiet suburban culture. In fact, we often hear local realtors refer to Country Walk as “the kind of place ‘The Brady Bunch’ would want to live.”
There’s no shortage of weekend activities, such as regular farmers markets, walks around the neighborhood’s famous lake, and game nights at Country Center Clubhouse. You’ll also find numerous high quality schools and shopping centers just a short walk away. For a neighborhood that’s so well-kept and thoughtfully preserved, it’s shocking how inexpensive it is to live in Country Walk.
