Moving is more than just dumping everything into boxes and then driving to the next place. There’s a number of factors to think about—including doctors, service providers, schools, and plenty of others. Here’s a handy checklist to keep you on the right track to have a successful move.
Set a budget for the move
Make sure you’re aware of all moving expenses you’re going to face. Having a dedicated moving budget can save you a big hassle down the road.
Schedule a mover
If you’re moving out of state, you want to schedule with your mover about two months out to make sure it goes smoothly (usually one month is fine if you’re moving in state, and two weeks is good if you’re just moving across town).
Request time off
The earlier you file for time off for the move, the more likely you are to get it.
Look for new schools
If you have kids, you’ll want to make sure the registration process for the new school is handled (or you at least have the checklist of items they need). Pro-tip: if your new home’s address is part of the school registration process, make sure you get bills in both you and your spouse’s name.
Get moving insurance
Moving insurance can keep your belongings covered if something were to happen to them.
Gather your records
You’ll want to make sure all your financial, legal, and medical records are gathered together so they don’t get mixed up in the move.
Set up internet
Schedule your internet set up for your new home so you don’t have to wait to get connected.
Get doctor, dentist and vet
If you’re moving to a new city, having selected new medical professionals, or at least a list of candidates, is key.
Notify your insurance company
Contact your insurance company about your intended move.
Sign up for kids’ extracurriculars
If your kids play competitive sports or other extracurriculars, look to find the new options for them.
Set up mail forwarding
Update your mailing address so you don’t miss out on receiving incoming mail.
Transfer prescriptions
If you’re moving a decent distance away, have your prescriptions sent to a new pharmacy.
Wake up early
You’ll want to tackle the day head-on. Do a final sweep of your home before the movers arrive and have a quiet cup of coffee.
Protect your floors and carpets
Set up protective coverings so that you can protect your floors from all the movement.
Work with your movers
Be available to moderate the movers and answer any questions they may have.
Final sweep
Once everything is loaded, make one final sweep. You can clean the house with friends or hire professionals. But with everything out, it’s time to enjoy your new home.
