Top Neighborhoods in Miami for First-Time Homebuyers

Miami-Dade County is one of the nation’s largest, both by population and by economic size, so it’s no surprise that we continue to draw new residents from across the country. And when those residents decide it’s time to turn from renters into owners, you start to realize how big Miami-Dade County truly is, so finding the right area for your needs and circumstances can be challenging. First-time homebuyers tend to have very specific priorities like proximity to schools, things to do on weekends, and of course, safety.

To simplify this process, here are a few neighborhoods in Miami that do a particularly good job of meeting the top priorities of first-time homebuyers.

Buying Your First Home in South Miami/Dadeland

A lot of first-time homebuyers are coming from central parts of Miami but have to move further out when it’s time to buy. While neighborhoods like Shenandoah, the Gables, and the Grove are wonderful, that inner ring of neighborhoods are typically out of the price budget for first-time buyers. One of the first areas we have those buyers check out is the Dadeland side of South Miami.

Still close in so it’s easy to get around but slightly more affordable than the Gables and the Grove, the South Miami/Dadeland/Glenvar Heights area is a great place to start shopping.

Homes By The Falls/Palmetto Bay

For first time buyers that want a little more space than they can get in South Miami, the next spot we typically recommend looking is just down the road in Palmetto Bay or on the other side of the US-1 near The Falls.

The neighborhood contains several high-quality schools as well as myriad shopping and dining destinations. This is the part of town where you’ll find a much more tranquil atmosphere that suits new families. On that note, Palmetto Bay also contains a number of high ranking schools, from private institutions such as Westminster and Palmer Trinity to public schools such as Coral Reef Elementary and Palmetto Senior High.

First Time Buyers in Westchester/Coral Terrace

Just west of Coral Gables you’ll find Westchester and Coral Terrace, two neighborhoods that have been traditional areas where first-time buyers look. Depending on the factors of what they’re looking for – commute times, schools, property sizes etc – determines if we recommend our clients to look in Westchester or Coral Terrace before South Miami or Palmetto Bay.
