Signs It’s Time to Downsize: Smaller homes are sometimes better

nathan-fertig-249917It is tough to decide to move from your home to a smaller one, especially after you’ve watched your family grow up in your home. It’s often the most practical decision you can make.

Here are four signs that you’re ready to downsize from your large family home.

  1. It’s too much maintenance

If there’s a room that no one goes in except to clean it, it may be time to downsize.

Large homes are, at times, difficult to keep up. Big homes often come with big yards, which can be an issue, unless you enjoy yard work. Sometimes the maintenance of a large home can leave you feeling worn out and exhausted. When the upkeep becomes too much, living in a large house can quickly become an unnecessary burden.

  1. It’s hard to get from room to room

If you’ve thought about converting your office into a master bedroom on the ground floor, it may be time to downsize.

Stairs are an issue when mobility problems arrive, so a one-level house can help by making moving throughout the house easier. There’s no need to put extra stress on yourself by continuing to take care of upstairs rooms that you no longer need.

  1. You’re retired

If you look at you’re a/c bill and realize the cost could fund that trip to Europe you’ve wanted to take, it may be time to downsize.

If you’ve recently retired, downsizing your home can be a great way to enjoy your retirement. You may be able to get equity out of your home while also cutting down on expenses such as taxes, insurance payments, and more. So even if you’ve paid off your mortgage, it’s an idea worth investigating.

  1. You Have Too Much Stuff

We naturally expand into the space we have; that’s why when people buy their first home, one of their biggest pet peeves is having a room without any furniture. They rush to fill it.

After living in a home for 20+ years, it’s only natural to have accrued a lot of stuff. It’s possible that you don’t need a lot of it. Moving is the best way to get rid of what you don’t want, because really: are you going to pack something up, and then unpack it again, if you don’t use it?

When you downsize, you should only take what you actually use. That feeling can be liberating.
