Tips for Decluttering and Staging Your Miami Home to Sell

A big part of preparing your home for sale is making simple changes appearance-wise so you can impress potential buyers and garner higher offers. If only you could do this with the snap of a finger.

Don’t panic. Over the past 20 years, we’ve helped many families here in Miami make their homes look impeccable and leave a lasting impression on anyone who steps inside, so we know what makes this process easier.

With this in mind, here are a few tips for decluttering and staging your Miami home for sale:

Go Room by Room

A cluttered or crowded-looking home can make it difficult for buyers to envision themselves in the space. The idea is to make your home look as open as possible. So, you’ll want to go room by room, removing anything and everything that isn’t essential for daily living, or doesn’t contribute to the room’s functionality. Decide what you want to keep, donate, throw out, or sell. As an added benefit: doing this now will make moving much easier.

In terms of order, we recommend starting with the bedrooms because you’ll see the progress quickly. Take everything out of your closet and only put back what you want to keep. Donate, throw out, or sell the rest. Then, do the same thing in the living areas of your home. And make sure to go through any credenza or chest of drawers you have – everyone has an old user’s manual for a tv that they got rid of years ago hiding in there. Next up is the kitchen and the bathrooms – same drill. Lastly, if you have one, is the garage. It is most people’s catchall for things they are not sure what to do with and it will take time to go through everything.

Hire a Professional Cleaning Crew

We wouldn’t recommend hiring a professional cleaning crew if the appearance of your home wasn’t so important in facilitating a quick and lucrative sale. In just a few hours, a team of experienced cleaners can do a deep clean and have your home fully cleaned, from top to bottom. A cleaning crew will also focus on overlooked areas like baseboards, windowsills, and bathroom grout.

If you choose to clean your home yourself, it’s recommended to tackle one task at a time (e.g. washing windows) and then perform that task throughout the entire house before moving onto a different task, like scrubbing appliances or wiping down door handles.

Highlight the Best Features of Your Home

When it comes to staging, you want to arrange the furniture to create a sense of flow, or life. For example, instead of pointing furniture at the television, point the furniture towards each other, as if they were having a conversation.

Another way to add life to a space is by maximizing natural light. So, you may consider positioning furniture to highlight natural light, which will come in even stronger now that your windows are squeaky clean.

Lastly, you’d be surprised how far a few seemingly minor finishing touches can go. This includes setting the table, adding a fresh bouquet of flowers to the kitchen, or filling a bowl with fresh fruit on the counter. It sounds ridiculous, but trust us when we say these are the things potential buyers usually remember when they leave a showing. Those details help them to see how they want to live, and then they associate that feeling with your home and it stands out from the rest.
